Tree Removal in Caterham: Safe, Insured, and Done Properly

   We visit the property, assess the tree (height, diameter, species, condition), check access for our chipper, and look at what is in the fall zone. 2. Planning and permissions (if required)

Every tree removal job starts with the same question: is there room to fell it in one go, or does it need to come down in sections? The two core methods are directional felling and sectional dismantling, and which one we use depends entirely on the space available and what is in the way.

Directional Felling (Tree Felling)

Tree felling means cutting the tree at the base and allowing it to fall to the ground in a controlled direction. We make a notch cut (a wedge removed from the fall side) and a back cut on the opposite side, leaving a band of hinge wood between the two. The hinge controls the fall direction as the tree goes over. This method is efficient and is used where the landing zone is clear: open gardens, fields, or woodland. It requires no climbing or rigging.

Sectional Dismantling (Tree Dismantling)

Sectional dismantling (also called sectional removal) is used in confined spaces where directional felling is not possible. Our climber ascends the tree using either a rope system or climbing irons (which are permitted on trees being removed), works from the top down, and cuts sections that are lowered to the ground using a rigging system of ropes, pulleys, and friction hitches. Each section is assessed for its weight before cutting so the anchor point, usually a strong branch union lower in the crown, can safely take the load.
